Liposuction is a safe procedure when surgeons follow appropriate guidelines. We have an anesthesiologist present during liposuction to ensure that you are comfortable and safe. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, so we limit the amount of fat removed during any one operation.
During liposuction, a hollow metal tube called a cannula is connected to a suction machine. We insert the cannula through a small incision into the area of the body adjacent to the unwanted fat. The fat cells are then aspirated—in other words, removed. Infiltration of physiological saline solutions allows easier removal of fatty tissue, reduces blood loss, and increases postoperative comfort. Because the incisions and the cannula are small, the resulting scars are usually inconspicuous.
