Before and After Photos

This patient had prior breast augmentation followed by implant removal many years ago. She was bothered by the drooping appearing of her breasts. Dr. Rao performed a subfascial breast augmentation and a breast lift using a scar just around her areola.

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Augmentation With Lift?

Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift quite literally gives patients the best of both worlds: the breasts are fuller with a more uniform, rounded shape, as well as lifted and perky. The benefits of this procedure are many, including:

  • Increased breast size and fullness
  • Balanced, pleasing shape to the breasts
  • Improved asymmetries between breasts
  • Breasts are perky and higher on the chest

At Center for Plastic Surgery, your breast augmentation with lift is highly customized to your specific needs and your natural anatomy. Your plastic surgeon will help you design the look you desire—such as implant type, shape, and position—in order to provide the most authentic and satisfying results.

What Are My Breast Augmentation With Lift Options?

If you think you might be interested in combining a breast augmentation with a breast lift, you have some options for further customization. Our plastic surgeons use various techniques when combining a breast lift with augmentation to provide you with the best possible results. The best options for your breast lift with augmentation will depend on your unique goals and natural anatomy.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss options for your augmentation and lift, including the following:

Types of Breast Implants

Since part of this procedure is breast augmentation, you’ll need to decide what type of implant you want. A large part of your final appearance will depend upon the implants you choose. There are four main factors you will need to consider before choosing your implants:

  • Material. Implants come with two main types of filling material: saline and silicone. Both options can provide beautiful, natural-looking results, though they do have some distinct differences in appearance, feel, cost, and incision requirements.
  • Shape. Implants are available in two shapes: round and teardrop. Saline and silicone are typically round, but silicone and highly cohesive silicone are also available in teardrop shape, which provides a natural sloping appearance to the breast.
  • Profile. Your existing anatomy and the final look you want to achieve will work together to determine the best profile for you. Profile refers to the projection of a breast implant, or how far it sticks out from your chest.
  • Size. The size of your implants can be anywhere between 125cc and 800cc or more. Depending on your natural breasts, you may require two different implant sizes if you have a preexisting asymmetry.
“I highly recommend CPS for any cosmetic surgery! I had my breast augmentation procedure done here and they were FANTASTIC. I recommend them to everyone! They were so supportive and helpful and now I couldn’t be more pleased with my results. Best of all I never felt obligated to do anything and the staff was warm, friendly, and really made me feel at home. It was the best decision I could have made and I will continue to go to Center for Plastic Surgery for any other procedures in the future.”

Types of Breast Lifts

The level of sagging you wish to correct will determine which lifting technique will achieve your desired results:

  • Traditional (Anchor) Lift. The traditional breast lift has what is known as an anchor scar. Because of the design of the skin excision, the resulting scar is in an anchor configuration. The scars are around the areola, a vertical scar from the areola to the crease, and then a horizontal scar in the crease. All scars are concealed by a bra or swimsuit.
  • Periareolar (Donut) Lift. The periareolar technique is best for correcting minimal sagging through a circular incision around the edge of the areola. This leaves just one barely visible scar.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) Lift. The lollipop lift is most often used to address moderate sagging. By making incisions both around the edge of the areola and vertically from the bottom of the areola to the inframammary fold (in the shape of a lollipop), our surgeons are able to provide greater reshaping of the breast. The resulting scars are easily hidden.

What Is a Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

You have yet another option for augmenting your breasts with a technique called autologous fat transfer. Sometimes called fat transfer breast augmentation this option allows patients to increase the size of their breasts without using silicone or saline implants.  This can be done in conjunction with a breast lift.  The outcome of a breast lift with fat transfer is usually somewhere in between what could be expected from a breast lift alone and a breast lift with an implant.   There can be a modest increase in volume and fullness but in a more natural and understated fashion compared to what can be achieved with a breast implant.

Instead, fat is harvested from another part of the patient’s body using liposuction, purified, and re-injected into another area of the body. This procedure has been popularized partly as it is a part of the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure but also because it offers a more natural alternative to synthetic fillers. Patients can opt for a fat transfer breast augmentation with or without implants.

Candidates for Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Ideal candidates for fat transfer breast augmentation:

  • Want only a modest increase in the size of their breasts (with fat grafting alone)
  • Have enough fat in another area of the body
  • Have good skin elasticity

Other candidates may be interested in this alternative to traditional breast implants as it provides augmentation without placing foreign materials in the body.

The Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Procedure

The fat transfer technique involves the following three steps:

  1. Liposuction: Patients often choose the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks as the donor site.
  2. Purification: The fat is processed to separate the fat cells from impurities.
  3. Re-injection: Your surgeon will use a syringe called a cannula to carefully place the fat in the target area, smoothing it to create a natural-looking contour.

How Is Breast Augmentation With Lift Performed?

Your Breast Augmentation With Lift Consultation

At CPS, consultations are crucial steps in the plastic surgery process. During your initial consultation, you’ll have time to meet and discuss your goals with your plastic surgeon. Be sure to ask any questions you have, as your surgeon will be able to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as give you a good idea of what you can reasonably expect from the results.

The Breast Augmentation With Lift Procedure

Your breast augmentation with lift will be customized to your unique needs, goals, and anatomy, so your surgical plan may be a little different than the following. Generally, a breast augmentation with lift is as follows:

Your procedure will be performed either in our Virginia office’s accredited outpatient surgery suite or at a local hospital, whichever is more convenient for you. Breast augmentation with lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia administered by one of our board-certified anesthesiologists.

Your surgeon will begin by making careful incisions in the location you and your surgeon previously decided upon. They will tighten sagging skin, reposition breast tissues, and place the implants. If indicated, the nipple-areolar complex will be moved into a more pleasing position. Fat transfer to the breasts can also be used to create a more natural-looking, seamless contour. Once your surgeon is pleased with the results, they will carefully close the incisions.

What Can I Expect From Breast Augmentation With Lift Recovery?

Immediately following your procedure, your breasts will be taped or bandaged, and you’ll likely be placed in a light surgical bra. Some patients may have drains placed during surgery. Your surgeon will send you home with specific aftercare instructions on incision care, controlling discomfort, and more.

Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions since they will help you control your discomfort and will greatly aid in healing. You will likely be asked to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and bending at the waist for a few weeks following your procedure. You will experience swelling and bruising, which usually peak around day four post-op. Your instructions will include things you can do to reduce swelling and bruising, such as:

  • Wearing your surgical bra day and night until instructed otherwise
  • Taking your medications as prescribed
  • Avoiding strenuous activities and exercise

Breast Augmentation With Lift Recovery Timeline

Each patient will have a slightly different recovery process, allowing for differences in healing, techniques, and procedures. A general breast augmentation with lift recovery timeline is as follows:

Week One:
  • Begin incorporating low-impact movements like walking
  • Dressings and drains (if used) removed
  • Take a shower
Week Two:
  • Return to work and nonstrenuous activities (depending on the nature of your job)
  • Implants will begin to settle and become more rounded
  • Bruising begins to heal
Weeks Three & Four:
  • Swelling and bruising should be greatly improved if not totally healed
  • Patients can resume low-impact exercise
Month Two:
  • Resume strenuous exercise
  • Patients can sleep on their side
  • Breast implants settle (drop and fluff)
Month Three and Beyond:
  • Final results
  • Scars fade

Be sure to monitor your incisions throughout your healing process; follow your instructions, and don’t hesitate to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns. Once your incisions close, about three to four weeks after surgery, you’ll be able to swim and bathe. They’ll be fully healed at two to three months, but be advised that achieving thin, faint, and flat scars will take some time and diligent care on your part.

Breast Augmentation With Lift FAQ

How long will my results last?

Both breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are intended to be long-lasting, although nothing can stop the natural aging process or subsequent changes to the body. If your procedure included a breast augmentation with implants, then you can assume the longevity of that procedure is related to the implants themselves, meaning breast implants have about a 10-15 year shelf life before it is recommended to replace them. Your breast lift will involve removing excess skin and repositioning tissues, which is permanent unless aging or pregnancy changes the results.

Can I combine my breast lift with augmentation with any other procedures?

Certainly! In fact, combining plastic surgery procedures is a great way to ensure a cohesive result, as well as cut down on surgical costs and recovery time. Many patients choose to combine multiple procedures in one with a Mommy Makeover. This popular surgery is fantastic for women who want to restore their bodies after pregnancy, childbirth, or simply the natural aging process. Breast augmentation with lift is a perfect addition to combine with liposuction or a tummy tuck for a full-body transformation.
