Brow Lift in Washington D.C.

Are deep furrows or sagging skin around your brows causing you to look tired or concerned?
The areas around the eyes and forehead are responsible for the majority of your facial expressions, and if your brow is heavy or sagging, you may be sending mixed signals. A brow lift is designed to combat these common signs of aging, lift the brows, and create a more rested, pleasant appearance.

The board-certified plastic surgeons at Center for Plastic Surgery offer brow lift surgery to help patients look naturally refreshed, rested, and youthful. Our experienced surgeons can perform this procedure alone with stunning results or combine it with another facial rejuvenation procedure (such as eyelid or facelift surgery) for a cohesive, harmonious result.

What Are the Benefits of a Brow Lift?

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, helps patients return their brows to a youthful position, dramatically reducing the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. A brow lift can correct:

  • Excess upper eyelid skin
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Drooping or misshapen brow
  • Deep forehead furrows

A brow lift can restore a smooth, youthful appearance by removing excess or sagging skin, tightening the remaining skin, and repositioning underlying tissues and muscles.

Am I a Candidate for a Brow Lift?

There is no standard age for having a brow lift procedure—everyone ages differently and has unique concerns. When you begin to notice that forehead furrows remain when your face is at rest or that you look tired or angry when you’re happy and well-rested, it may be time to consider a brow lift.

Candidates for a brow lift:

  • Want to smooth deep creases and forehead wrinkles
  • Have sagging brows that they feel make them look angry or tired
  • Are generally in good health
  • Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations for results

For many patients, brow lift surgery is combined with eyelid, facelift, or neck lift surgery to create a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan.

What Are My Brow Lift Options?

If you think you are a candidate for a brow lift and would like to find out more about how this procedure can benefit you, as well as which brow lift option is best for you, a comprehensive consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons can provide you with expert guidance.

Temporal Brow Lift

Also known as a lateral brow lift, the temporal brow lift can be used to address folds and small wrinkles in the forehead and crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes and is often performed in combination with blepharoplasty. By lifting the skin at the temple, this procedure restores an elegant, youthful look to the lateral eyebrow area. The temporal lift requires slightly larger incisions than the endoscopic lift, but the results have been shown to last longer.

Direct Brow Lift

A direct brow lift can provide powerful and long-lasting results and involves an incision at the superior border of the eyebrow. This option can also be performed under local anesthesia. A direct brow lift is often the best option for patients who are bald or have a weak or receding hairline. This technique is also a good option for patients with lighter skin tones who have concerns about scarring, as incisions are usually made in less noticeable areas.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

While an endoscopic brow lift was traditionally the most common technique, CPS now focuses on performing temporal brow lifts as the results have been shown to last longer. The endoscopic procedure is an option for select patients and typically requires a few small, inch-long incisions. After the incisions have been made, your surgeon will use a special tiny camera (endoscope) and small instruments to lift the underlying tissues, re-position forehead muscles, and remove excess skin as necessary until desired results have been achieved.

  • Brow Lift or BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections have become a popular treatment option for patients wanting to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the upper face, particularly around the eyes and forehead. As a non-surgical, office-based solution, it is an attractive alternative to brow lift surgery for many patients. Consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help you determine which treatment is best suited to your unique concerns.

Brow Lift vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic Candidates

Brow Lift: Have moderate to advanced muscle laxity, loose skin and tissues, and deep creases throughout the forehead and brow area.

BOTOX® Cosmetic: Candidates may have early signs of aging, such as mild fine lines and wrinkles across the forehead and possible creases between the eyebrows.

Brow Lift vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic Downtime and Results

Brow Lift: Usually requires two weeks of downtime, with natural-looking results that can last up to ten years or more.

BOTOX® Cosmetic: Requires no downtime or recovery, with subtle results that can prevent future wrinkles from forming with continued use. Results usually last about three to six months.

FACE360

If you’re unsure which option is best for you, consider Center for Plastic Surgery’s signature facial rejuvenation program, FACE360. Rather than focusing on one singular “issue” or facial feature, our surgeons use a multimodal approach by combining surgical procedures and non-surgical aesthetic treatments for a more comprehensive result. With FACE360, our surgeons and aesthetic providers consider all aspects of a person’s facial anatomy and goals and create a customized plan to address their needs. FACE360 plans can include combined surgical procedures—a brow lift and facelift, for example—as well as minimally invasive aesthetics such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers, and even non-invasive skin care for long-lasting results.

  • How Is a Brow Lift Performed?

Your Brow Lift Consultation

At CPS, each brow lift is designed to the specific needs and anatomy of the patient, which is why your consultation is a crucial step in the process. During your meeting with one of our experienced brow lift surgeons, you can ask any questions you may have, voice any concerns, and learn about what you can expect from the procedure, recovery, and results. Additionally, if you would like to combine your brow lift with another facial enhancement procedure, such as an eyelid lift or facelift, your consultation is an opportunity to develop your custom treatment plan.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons are highly trained and experienced in creating safe, harmonious, and natural-looking brow lift results. Your surgeon will develop an individualized, comprehensive surgical plan to incorporate the techniques and processes—including any combination procedures—that will be utilized during your surgery. Patient safety and comfort are of the utmost importance at Center for Plastic Surgery, so you will always be in good hands.

The Brow Lift Procedure

Your brow lift will be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation administered by one of our board-certified anesthesiologists. Each brow lift is individually designed with the specific needs of the patient in mind. As such, each brow lift procedure will vary from patient to patient. The following is what you may expect from the brow lift process.

On the day of your procedure, your surgeon will check in with you to answer any last-minute questions and go over your surgical plan once more. They may also mark the incision locations with a marker.

Your surgeon will begin the surgery by making careful incisions in the pre-determined areas. Depending on your areas of concern, a brow lift can be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures, such as facelift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). A brow lift generally includes:

  • Modification or removal of the muscles that cause frown lines
  • Removal of excess skin that gives the brow a heavy appearance
  • Lifting of the eyebrows for a rested and relaxed look

Most brow lifts are performed as outpatient procedures, although some patients who are combining procedures or who have come in from out of town opt for an overnight hospital stay.

  • What Can I Expect From Brow Lift Recovery?

After surgery, you will be wrapped in a light head dressing for 48 hours. Your surgeon will provide you with aftercare instructions on incision care, pain management, and controlling swelling.

For a comfortable and safe recovery, be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions exactly. It’s also important to rest as much as possible, along with incorporating light movement, such as walking, to limit the risk of blood clots. Find a balance between rest and movement, and listen to your body.

Mild bruising and swelling during the first week are not unusual, and most patients are able to resume a normal level of activity within two weeks after surgery. Possible risks associated with a brow lift include numbness and weakness in the muscles of the forehead. Complications are rare and usually temporary.

Some brow lift recovery tips include:

  • Wearing your compression wrap or headband as directed.
  • Keeping your head elevated while sleeping; some patients report sleeping in a reclining chair is most comfortable in the early stages of recovery.
  • Using cold compresses (such as a gel ice pack) to soothe discomfort and reduce swelling.

Brow Lift Recovery Timeline

Each patient will have a different recovery process, accounting for differences in rates of healing, additional procedures, and other factors. A general brow lift recovery timeline is as follows:

Week One:
  • Swelling and bruising will be at their peak; resting and keeping your head elevated will be key.
  • Patients may be wearing a compression bandage or dressing to help protect the incisions and minimize swelling.
  • Most patients who undergo brow lift surgery can return to work after one week.
Week Two:
  • Swelling will greatly improve, and any residual bruising will resolve
  • Makeup can be used to hide residual bruising.
  • Sutures are removed.
  • Light activity, such as walking, is encouraged.
  • May resume light aerobic activity.
Week Three:
  • Most patients can safely resume normal activities.
  • Light exercise is still encouraged, with limitations.
Months One through Three:
  • All physical activity can resume.
  • Safe to color or perm your hair.
Month Six and Beyond:
  • Final results.
  • Scars fade.

  • Brow Lift Frequently Asked Questions

Will I have scars after my brow lift?

We understand that visible scarring is a concern for our brow lift patients, but rest assured, our experienced surgeons place incisions only where absolutely necessary and in the most discreet locations.

Your surgeon will discuss incision placement with you during your consultation, as well as give you a good idea of what you can expect in terms of scars. While they are necessary with any surgery, most patients can easily conceal any scarring within their hairline. Additionally, once your scars are fully healed there are steps you can take to lighten or soften your scars, including scar ointments and laser resurfacing treatments.

How long will my brow lift results last?

Brow lift surgery is intended to be a long-lasting option for smoothing the brow and creating a more youthful, alert appearance. However, no surgery can stop the natural aging process, and you will continue to age.

Most patients can enjoy their brow lift results for up to 10 years or more, depending on factors such as lifestyle and genetics. You can maintain the results of your brow lift with non-surgical aesthetic treatments, such as regular laser resurfacing.
