Liposuction for Men in Washington D.C.

In Washington, DC; Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and surrounding areas, liposuction has always been one of the most popular procedures for men. From minimizing the appearance of male breasts to reducing love handles and sculpting the abs, liposuction has helped numerous men remove unwanted fat accumulations that are not responsive to diet or exercise. Though its goal is to address unwanted fat, it is important to remember that liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a substitute for weight loss. Men considering liposuction in Chevy Chase or Bethesda, MD, or Arlington, VA, combine the procedure with a weight loss and exercise program. Many men find the confidence boost they get through body contouring with liposuction gives them extra motivation to stay at a healthy weight.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction cannot change your body’s underlying structure, but it can significantly improve contours when subcutaneous fat is the problem. The best liposuction candidates are those who are at or close to their ideal body weight and size, yet still have persistent areas of unwanted fat accumulation.

The most common areas men have liposuction include the abdomen, chest, and hips, although other areas can be treated, such as the neck. If you feel that more than one issue needs to be corrected, liposuction may be combined with other procedures to maximize your overall benefits in one operation, such as tummy tuck surgery.

  • What Happens During Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is a safe procedure when surgeons follow appropriate guidelines. We have an anesthesiologist present during liposuction to ensure that you are comfortable and safe. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, so we limit the amount of fat removed during any one operation.

During liposuction, a hollow metal tube called a cannula is connected to a suction machine. We insert the cannula through a small incision into the area of the body adjacent to the unwanted fat. The fat cells are then aspirated—in other words, removed. Infiltration of physiological saline solutions allows easier removal of fatty tissue, reduces blood loss, and increases postoperative comfort. Because the incisions and the cannula are small, the resulting scars are usually inconspicuous.

Advanced Liposuction Technology

You can rest assured we keep up to date on the best in suction-assisted lipectomy techniques. Tumescent, MicroAire®, ultrasound, and laser-assisted techniques are all options your CPS board-certified plastic surgeon may discuss with you in consultation.

What Is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

After liposuction, you will be placed in an elastic support garment while you are still asleep. This garment will cover and compress the treated areas to limit fluid accumulation and provide gentle, balanced pressure to assure a smooth final contour. You will wear this garment continuously for two to four weeks, except when bathing.

Some patients experience bruising and swelling after liposuction. Others may experience some skin rippling. These conditions will improve considerably in the first few weeks, but the final result* can take several months to be fully visible. Most men are able to resume normal activities, including walking and driving, in 5 to 7 days. You should postpone strenuous exercise for three weeks.
