From Kaley Cuoco’s well-publicized love for her breast implants to fascinations with Kylie Jenner’s ever-plump pout, plastic surgery headlines often tell the tale of millennial celebrities who are anything but shy about the work they’ve had done. But are millennials in general having more cosmetic surgery than other generations?
The Washington Post recently highlighted the stats, and the answer may surprise you.
The numbers are in…
Bloggers and beauty sites may devote many an article to the rising number of millennials having plastic surgery, but baby boomers are actually visiting their cosmetic surgeons more frequently than other age ranges. Though millennials are getting lots of attention for their cosmetic procedures, that generation only accounts for a fairly small (though steady) percentage of total surgeries in the United States.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) 2015 statistics, the number of facelift and eyelid surgery patients who are 65 and older has increased by more than 50% over the last two decades, with the biggest jump happening within the past five years.
Why the upward swing?
- It’s more easily accessible. Until recent years, plastic surgery was considered a frivolous luxury accessible only to the wealthy. However, with the development of many more non-invasive options and availability of procedure financing, plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments have become more affordable for the masses.
- Keeping up with the Joneses (or the Kardashians). With people living for longer periods of time and continuing to work at older ages, the baby boomer set wants to avoid age discrimination in the workplace in addition to looking as good as they feel.
- Going under the knife isn’t quite so taboo anymore. Getting a little work done is now more widely accepted—and what was once taboo is becoming more commonplace.
