Education & Training
Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Rao earned his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Rochester, where he graduated with honors. After changing his career path to medicine, he attended medical school at The George Washington School of Medicine in Washington, DC, where he graduated at the top of his class and was inducted into the highly prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honors Society.
Following medical school, Dr. Rao gained acceptance into one of the country’s most competitive and elite plastic surgery residency programs at Georgetown University Hospital. While there, he trained under Dr. Scott Spear, a world-renowned cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery expert. Given his interest in reconstructive microsurgery, Dr. Rao also completed training in advanced microsurgical techniques at The Curtis National Hand Center Microsurgical Training Program.
Recognition & Awards
Dr. Rao’s exceptional skills and dedication have earned him numerous accolades. He has been a perennial selection for the Washingtonian magazine Top Doctors issue, as well as a Top Doctor selection in both Northern Virginia and Bethesda magazines. He has also been named one of America’s Best Physicians by the National Consumer Advisory Board.
Dr. Rao is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Aesthetic Society, and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also the President of the National Capitol Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Considered a thought leader in plastic surgery, Dr. Rao has served as an advisor to multiple breast implant manufacturers. His academic works have been published or presented nearly 30 times in leading plastic surgery journals and at prestigious national conferences. Dr. Rao also serves as a peer reviewer for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the pre-eminent medical journal in the field of plastic surgery.
