Rhinoplasty in
Washington, D.C.

Refine Your Nose and Bring Your Features Into Balance

If you are troubled by a nose that is crooked or out of balance with the rest of your face, you may want to consider rhinoplasty, also called a nose job. Our rhinoplasty specialists perform cosmetic nose surgery to change or improve the shape of the nose.
This procedure can also be used in conjunction with a septoplasty or turbinate reduction procedure to correct nasal breathing problems.
Because the nose is such a central facial feature, even subtle refinements can improve overall facial harmony while preserving a natural-looking appearance.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure that changes or improves the shape of the nose. It may also be combined with septoplasty or turbinate reduction to address nasal breathing problems.

A nose that does not suit your face can greatly impact your overall appearance and, for some people, self-confidence. Because the nose is such a central feature of the face, any flaws or abnormalities can be obvious, but the opposite is also true. When performed thoughtfully, rhinoplasty can bring the facial features into better balance and harmony.

Rhinoplasty can address the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, projection, symmetry, and overall proportion of the nose.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Some benefits of rhinoplasty include:
Rhinoplasty is a highly nuanced procedure in that each patient will have very different needs and varying results. For example, a patient with a prominent dorsal hump can achieve the benefit of a smoother and straighter nose bridge.
Your surgeon will review your anatomy and goals in detail and explain what changes are realistic and appropriate for you.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for
Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty candidates are people who want to alter their nose in some way: straighten or flatten the bridge, reduce the size or refine the nasal tip, reduce the size of the nostrils, and more. Rhinoplasty may also be medically necessary if the patient has breathing problems that need to be addressed.
Candidates for rhinoplasty:
Since rhinoplasty has more to do with correcting the structure of the face and little to do with aging concerns, it is one of the only cosmetic procedures routinely performed on patients younger than 18. Rhinoplasty can be done once nasal growth is complete.
In girls, this usually occurs by age 13, and in boys, by age 16. Rhinoplasty may also be performed later in life to address changes caused by injury, trauma, or progressive breathing issues.

How Rhinoplasty Is Performed

Rhinoplasty is often considered a procedure of millimeters, as even subtle changes can have a noticeable effect on the overall appearance of the nose. For this reason, care planning and precision are critical.

Below are some of the surgical techniques they may use.

Closed Rhinoplasty
This is the more common technique used in a majority of rhinoplasties, as the incisions are placed within the nose and do not leave visible scars. This method allows the surgeon to manipulate and sculpt tissue, cartilage, and bone.
Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is typically reserved for patients with more severe concerns or for revision rhinoplasty cases, as these are somewhat more complex than primary rhinoplasty. During an open rhinoplasty, incisions are placed across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils, which allows greater visibility and access to the nasal structures.

Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction
Septoplasty and turbinate reduction can be performed at the same time as rhinoplasty, each focusing on improving the patient’s ability to breathe.
Liquid Nose Job
Not fully committed to surgery? A liquid nose job is a non-surgical alternative to rhinoplasty that offers temporary improvement for minor nasal imperfections. Using dermal filler injections, your aesthetic provider can help create the appearance of a straighter nasal bridge or improved symmetry without surgery.
This option does not reduce the size of the nose and is best suited for select concerns.

Preparing for Your Rhinoplasty

Your first step in the rhinoplasty process is to meet with one of our experienced plastic surgeons. During this consultation, you will discuss your concerns, goals, and any questions you may have.
Your surgeon will examine your nose, including the skin, cartilage, and underlying structure. Computer imaging may be used to help illustrate potential outcomes and guide the surgical plan.
Before surgery, your team may give you instructions about medications, smoking or nicotine use, eating and drinking before anesthesia, arranging transportation, and preparing for the first week of recovery. You should also plan to avoid activities that could bump or injure the nose while you heal.

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty

Your surgical plan will be fully customized based on your anatomy and goals. In general, rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.
Surgery may take place in our Virginia office’s accredited surgical suite or at a local Washington, D.C. hospital, depending on your needs.
Incisions are typically made inside the nose and closed with dissolving sutures. If the nostrils need to be narrowed, small incisions may be placed at the nostril base. In more complex cases, an incision may be placed along the columella.
Once the necessary reshaping is complete, a splint is applied to support the new nasal structure during early healing.
After surgery, you will be monitored as you recover from anesthesia and sent home with detailed aftercare instructions.

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare

Immediately after rhinoplasty, your nose may be bandaged or taped, and internal splints may be placed. Bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort are expected during the initial recovery period. Pain typically peaks within the first few days and then steadily improves. Nasal congestion is common early on and resolves as swelling subsides.

Most patients return to work or school within seven to 10 days. Non-contact exercise may resume after two weeks, while contact sports should be avoided for at least six weeks. Although daily activities resume fairly quickly, full healing takes time, and patience is important as the final results gradually emerge.

Your surgeon will provide specific recovery instructions, which may include:

  • Do not blow your nose
  • Keep your head elevated and use cold compresses
  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Avoid activities that could bump or injure the nose

Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline

Recovery varies by patient, but a general rhinoplasty recovery timeline includes the following:
Months Four and Beyond
Week Two
Week Three
Months One Through Three
Months Four and Beyond

What Results Can I Expect From Rhinoplasty?

As swelling and bruising diminish over the first few weeks, improvements in nasal shape become more apparent. It typically takes six months to a year for the nose to fully heal and settle into its final form.
Rhinoplasty results can include a straighter nasal bridge, refined nasal tip, improved symmetry, smaller nostrils, better facial balance, or improved breathing, depending on your surgical plan.
