Breast Reduction in Washington D.C.

Technically called “breast hypertrophy,” oversized breasts may develop at any time, including at puberty and after childbirth. Hypertrophy can cause back pain, bra strap pain, irritation of the skin under the breasts and other problems. Women with very large breasts may have difficulty with physical activities such as jogging or tennis. They may also have problems finding fashionable clothes that fit well. The board-certified plastic surgeons at Center for Plastic Surgery perform breast reduction not only to reduce breast size but also to improve breast shape for our patients from Washington, DC; Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and other nearby areas.

What Causes Breast Hypertrophy?

Two factors contribute to excessive glandular tissue hypertrophy:

  • Excessive amounts of loose skin over the gland
  • Low placement of the nipple areolar complex

Breast reduction surgery corrects these conditions by reducing the size of the gland, repositioning the nipple and re-shaping the breast.

How Much Does Breast Reduction Cost in the Washington, DC, Metro Area?

In general, breast reduction starts at $11,000, depending on the complexity of the surgery. When breast hypertrophy is significant, insurance may cover some or all of the costs of surgery, but specific requirements must be met that may not always be aesthetically appropriate.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Women from age 14 to 80 have had successful breast reduction surgery. In younger patients, the surgery is performed once breast size has been stable for at least one year.

About Breast Reduction Surgery

Based on your age and breast size, we will choose one of several possible techniques to reposition the nipple. Then a portion of the glandular tissue is removed and the loose skin tightened to support and shape the reduced breast. The resulting scars are located around the nipple and in front of and under the breast in the breast crease.

Breast reduction is usually performed on an outpatient basis or with a one-night hospital stay.

“I had a breast reduction procedure done back in March 2013. The staff was wonderful and I felt very comfortable around Dr. French. I am extremely pleased with my results and my follow ups. The team was very supportive, kind, friendly and professional. I have already recommend Dr. French to a friend and would to anyone else for this type of procedure. Overall Dr. French and the staff at CPS were just amazing.”

After Breast Reduction Surgery

After surgery, a dressing will be placed around the chest. The dressing will be changed and the drain removed two or three days after surgery. You will wear a soft post-operative bra for three weeks, except when you bathe. You should not wear underwire bras or participate in impact exercises or athletics during this time. You can usually return to your daily routine 10 to 14 days after surgery. Complications from reduction mammoplasty are unusual. Occasionally, there may be a change in nipple sensation, but this is usually temporary.
