Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift in Washington, DC
Many women considering a breast lift want to restore a fuller, more youthful shape but aren't necessarily interested in breast implants. An auto-augmentation breast lift may offer another option by using your own breast tissue to create more fullness in the upper part of the breast.
“Many patients come in saying they like their breast size, but they don't like how their breasts have dropped or how they've lost fullness at the top. In the right patient, we can sometimes use the breast tissue she already has to create a fuller, more lifted shape without adding an implant.”
— Dr. Arjun P. Kanuri, board-certified plastic surgeon at Center for Plastic Surgery
For women considering a breast lift in Washington, DC, understanding the difference between a traditional breast lift, auto-augmentation, fat transfer, and breast implants can make it much easier to decide what type of result they actually want.

What Is an Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift?
An auto-augmentation breast lift is a breast lift technique that uses your own breast tissue to help reshape the breast and restore fullness.
During a traditional breast lift, excess skin is removed and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted. With auto-augmentation, the surgeon can take some of the patient's existing breast tissue from the lower part of the breast and reposition it higher.
Think of it as redistributing the volume you already have.
“You're not adding an implant and you're not necessarily trying to make the breast larger. We're using the patient's own tissue to improve the shape and put more fullness where she wants it.”
Why Do Breasts Lose Fullness at the Top?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, and gravity can all change the distribution of breast tissue.
A common result is that the breast becomes flatter at the top while more of the tissue settles toward the bottom. This is why some women say their breasts look “deflated” even though they haven't necessarily lost a significant amount of breast volume.
“The volume may still be there. The issue is often that it's no longer where the patient wants it. A breast lift reshapes the breast, and auto-augmentation gives us another way to use that existing tissue to improve fullness higher on the breast.”
Can You Get a Breast Lift Without Implants?
Absolutely. Breast implants are not required to have a breast lift.
The important question is what you want the surgery to accomplish. If you like your current breast size but want your breasts lifted and reshaped, a breast lift alone may provide the change you're looking for. If you also want to preserve or improve fullness in the upper breast, auto-augmentation may be an option.
One useful way to think about the decision is to ask: Do you want your breasts lifted, or do you also want them larger?
“If a patient tells me, ‘I like my size, I just want everything back where it used to be,’ that's a very different conversation from someone who wants to go significantly larger. The first patient may not need an implant at all.”
Who Is a Good Candidate for an Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift?
Auto-augmentation works best when there is enough natural breast tissue available to reshape and reposition. A good candidate may:
Have sagging or drooping breasts
Have lost fullness in the upper breast
Have enough natural breast tissue to reposition
Be generally happy with her current breast size
Want a more youthful breast shape
Prefer to avoid breast implants if possible
Be in good overall health and have realistic expectations
The technique isn't appropriate for everyone.
“If there isn't enough breast tissue to work with, we can't create volume that isn't there. That's when we may start talking about fat transfer or an implant, depending on what the patient wants to achieve.”
Auto-Augmentation vs. Fat Transfer vs. Breast Implants
There are several ways to combine a breast lift with additional fullness. The main difference is where that fullness comes from.
| Auto-Augmentation | Fat Transfer | Breast Implant | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume comes from | Your existing breast tissue | Fat from another part of your body | Silicone or saline implant |
| Makes breasts larger? | Usually not | Can add modest volume | Yes |
| Uses your own tissue? | Yes | Yes | No |
| Requires liposuction? | No | Yes | No |
| Best suited for | Women who like their size but want better shape and fullness | Women who want some additional volume without an implant | Women who want a more noticeable increase in size or fullness |
“I'd rather have a patient show me what she wants her breasts to look like than come in convinced she needs a particular technique. Once I understand the result she wants and examine her anatomy, we can figure out the best way to get there.”
In some cases, more than one technique can be combined. Center for Plastic Surgery also offers GalaFLEX™, a resorbable surgical scaffold sometimes referred to as an “internal bra,” for patients who may benefit from additional internal support.
What If I Want More Fullness but Still Don't Want Implants?
Fat transfer may be another option. With fat grafting to the breasts, fat is removed from another area of your body with liposuction, prepared, and then carefully transferred into the breasts.
This can provide additional volume without using an implant.
“Fat grafting is useful when a patient wants a little more volume than we can achieve simply by reshaping her existing breast tissue. But there are limits to how much volume we can reliably add with fat.”
Will Auto-Augmentation Give Me the Same Fullness as an Implant?
Not necessarily, and this is an important expectation to understand.
Auto-augmentation works with the tissue you already have. A breast implant adds volume that wasn't there before. That means the two procedures can create different results.
“If someone shows me a photo with a very full, rounded upper breast and significant cleavage, I need to be realistic with her about whether her own tissue can create that look. Sometimes it can get us where she wants to go, and sometimes an implant is the better tool.”
Does Auto-Augmentation Require Different Scars?
Generally, no. Auto-augmentation is performed as part of the breast lift itself. The external incisions are therefore similar to those used for a traditional breast lift.
Depending on how much lifting and reshaping is necessary, the incision may be around the areola; around the areola and vertically down the lower breast; or around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the breast crease. The additional tissue reshaping takes place inside the breast.
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovery is generally similar to recovery from a traditional breast lift. Many patients with desk jobs plan approximately one week away from work, although individual recovery varies.
During the first several weeks, patients typically need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise while the breast tissue heals.
“Patients understandably focus on how they'll look right after surgery, but breasts continue to settle and change for months. The early result isn't the final result.”
How Long Do Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift Results Last?
A breast lift can create a long-lasting improvement, but no breast surgery can stop the effects of aging and gravity. Pregnancy and significant weight fluctuations can also change the breasts after surgery.
“I tell patients we're turning back the clock, not stopping it. Your breasts will continue to age, but they'll be aging from the improved position and shape we created.”
How Do I Know Which Type of Breast Lift Is Right for Me?
You don't need to figure that out before your consultation. The more useful starting point is what bothers you and what you want your breasts to look like.
Am I happy with my current breast size?
Do I want to be larger?
Is my biggest concern sagging?
Have I lost fullness at the top of my breasts?
Do I want to avoid implants?
Would I consider fat transfer?
What type of breast shape do I find attractive?
Bringing examples of results you like—and even results you don't like—can help communicate your preferences.
“The consultation isn't about fitting every patient into the same operation. It's about figuring out what combination of lifting, reshaping, and volume will give that particular patient the result she's looking for.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an auto-augmentation breast lift make breasts bigger?
Usually not. Auto-augmentation primarily redistributes the breast tissue you already have. Your breasts may look fuller, particularly in the upper portion, because the tissue has been lifted and reshaped. If you want a significant increase in breast size, fat transfer or a breast implant may be more appropriate.
Is auto-augmentation the same as fat transfer?
They are different techniques, although both use your own tissue. Auto-augmentation typically uses breast tissue that is already within the breast and repositions it. Fat transfer takes fat from another part of your body with liposuction and adds that fat to the breast. The two techniques may sometimes be combined.
Can auto-augmentation replace breast implants?
For some patients, yes—but it depends on the desired result. A woman who likes her existing breast size and primarily wants a lifted, fuller shape may be able to achieve her goals without implants. A woman who wants a substantial increase in size or a very full upper-breast appearance may be better served by an implant.
Will I have scars?
Yes. Auto-augmentation is still performed as part of a breast lift, so breast lift incisions are required. Scars generally fade and mature over time but do not completely disappear.
Can I breastfeed after an auto-augmentation breast lift?
Breastfeeding may still be possible after breast lift surgery, but any surgery involving the breast can potentially affect the ability to breastfeed. If you plan to become pregnant or breastfeed in the future, discuss this with Dr. Kanuri during your consultation.
