Breast Reduction
in Washington, D.C.

Feel Lighter, More Comfortable, and More Confident

Technically called “breast hypertrophy,” oversized breasts may develop at any time, including at puberty and after childbirth. Hypertrophy can cause back pain, bra strap pain, irritation of the skin under the breasts, and other problems. Women with very large breasts may have difficulty with physical activities such as jogging or tennis. They may also have problems finding fashionable clothes that fit well.

The experienced plastic surgeons at Center for Plastic Surgery perform breast reduction not only to reduce breast size but also to improve breast shape for our patients from Washington, D.C., Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD, Arlington and Fairfax, VA, and other nearby areas.

Breast reduction can help relieve physical discomfort while creating smaller, more lifted, and more proportional breasts.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that reduces oversized breasts by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. The procedure also reshapes the breasts and repositions the nipple-areolar complex to create a smaller, lifted, more balanced breast appearance.

For many patients, the goal is not only to reduce cup size but also to improve comfort, mobility, breast shape, clothing fit, and overall quality of life.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a unique procedure in that it carries both aesthetic and functional benefits for patients suffering from excessively large breasts. This procedure improves the patient’s quality of life in addition to the following breast reduction benefits:
Breast reduction maintains some of the highest satisfaction of any cosmetic procedure, as patients often feel immense relief from the physical and emotional burden of their large breasts and are ecstatic with their smaller, more shapely, and comfortable breasts.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for
Breast Reduction?

If you are tired of your large breasts weighing you down mentally, physically, and emotionally, breast reduction surgery might be for you.

How Breast Reduction Is Performed

Breast reduction surgery corrects excessive glandular tissue hypertrophy by reducing the glandular tissue, repositioning the nipple, and reshaping the breast.
Breast reduction is performed using one of two options, each ideal for specific levels of revision, nipple-areolar position, and breast size.
Lollipop Incision
This incision type encircles the areola and then travels vertically down the breast, forming a lollipop shape. This method allows mild to moderate revision and is ideal for patients with less severe sagging.
Anchor, or Inverted T, Incision
The anchor incision is ideal for patients with moderate to severe concerns, as it allows for the most significant revision. The incision encircles the nipple, runs vertically down toward the bottom of the breast, and then runs horizontally under the breast.
Your surgeon will recommend the incision pattern that best fits your breast size, degree of sagging, skin quality, and goals for shape and lift.

Preparing for Your Breast Reduction

Before surgery, your team may provide instructions about medications, smoking or nicotine use, eating and drinking before anesthesia, arranging transportation, and preparing your recovery space. You may also be advised to purchase a soft post-operative bra and plan time away from work, school, exercise, and strenuous activities.

What to Expect During
Breast Reduction

Your breast reduction procedure will be curated exactly to your needs and anatomy. Because we take a custom approach to each procedure, your surgical steps may look different from someone else’s, but generally, you can expect the procedure to go as follows:
Breast reduction is usually performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis or with a one-night hospital stay. You and your surgeon will have chosen one of the previous incision types during your consultation, and this decision is usually based on your age, breast size, and preferences.
Your surgeon will make the predetermined incision, then remove a portion of the glandular tissue (breast tissue), and, if necessary, fat. The loose skin is then tightened to support and shape the reduced breast.
Once you have been monitored as you wake from anesthesia, you will be given aftercare instructions and sent home with a responsible driver.

Breast Reduction Recovery & Aftercare

Immediately after your breast reduction, expect some swelling, bruising, and possible discomfort. Your breasts will be wrapped in a surgical dressing, which will be switched later on for a soft surgical bra.
You and your responsible caregiver will be given aftercare instructions, and you will be sent home. To minimize swelling and discomfort, sleep propped up, and be sure to take your medications as prescribed.
In some cases, patients may experience a change in nipple sensation, but this is usually temporary. Be sure to follow your aftercare instructions closely; they will include information on caring for your incisions, when and how to bathe, and when to start light walking to reduce blood clots.

Breast Reduction Recovery Timeline

Each patient is different, so there will always be some variation in breast reduction recovery. However, a general breast reduction recovery timeline is as follows:
Week One
Week Two
Weeks Three and Four
Month Two
Month Three and Beyond

What Results Can I Expect From Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction results can include smaller, lighter, more shapely breasts and a more balanced physical frame. Many patients also experience improvement in neck and back discomfort, bra strap pain, skin irritation, sleep comfort, physical activity, and clothing options.
Final results will continue to refine as swelling improves and scars fade. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your breast reduction results in the long term.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Will my insurance cover my breast reduction surgery?
When breast hypertrophy is significant, insurance may cover some or all of the costs of surgery, but specific requirements must be met that may not always be aesthetically appropriate. In order for a breast reduction procedure to be covered in part or in full by your insurance, it must be deemed medically necessary.
In most cases, no. Breast reduction surgery incorporates some of the same tissue manipulations as a breast lift, resulting in a lifted result. However, if you have severe breast ptosis or you want a significant lift that results in upper pole fullness or cleavage, then you may wish to discuss your options with your surgeon.
Yes. In any procedure that involves moving the nipple-areolar complex, such as a breast reduction or certain breast lifts, there is usually a change in nipple sensation, including a loss of sensation, tingling, or numbness. Most of the time, these changes are temporary, but there is a risk of long-term or permanent changes.
Your incision pattern will depend on your breast size, nipple-areolar position, degree of sagging, and desired amount of reduction. A lollipop incision may be appropriate for mild to moderate revision, while an anchor incision is often used for moderate to severe concerns.
