What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure that changes or improves the shape of the nose. It may also be combined with septoplasty or turbinate reduction to address nasal breathing problems.
A nose that does not suit your face can greatly impact your overall appearance and, for some people, self-confidence. Because the nose is such a central feature of the face, any flaws or abnormalities can be obvious, but the opposite is also true. When performed thoughtfully, rhinoplasty can bring the facial features into better balance and harmony.
Rhinoplasty can address the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, projection, symmetry, and overall proportion of the nose.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

- Better facial balance
- Improved breathing
- Corrected asymmetries, flaws, or abnormalities
- A straighter, more symmetrical nose
- In some cases, a smaller nose

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for
Rhinoplasty?

- Want to alter the shape, size, or projection of any part of the nose
- Want to address breathing problems
- Are generally in good health
- Have reasonable expectations for results
- Are nonsmokers, or are willing to quit
- Their nose is fully grown

How Rhinoplasty Is Performed

Below are some of the surgical techniques they may use.
Open rhinoplasty is typically reserved for patients with more severe concerns or for revision rhinoplasty cases, as these are somewhat more complex than primary rhinoplasty. During an open rhinoplasty, incisions are placed across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils, which allows greater visibility and access to the nasal structures.
This option does not reduce the size of the nose and is best suited for select concerns.
Preparing for Your Rhinoplasty

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare
Immediately after rhinoplasty, your nose may be bandaged or taped, and internal splints may be placed. Bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort are expected during the initial recovery period. Pain typically peaks within the first few days and then steadily improves. Nasal congestion is common early on and resolves as swelling subsides.
Most patients return to work or school within seven to 10 days. Non-contact exercise may resume after two weeks, while contact sports should be avoided for at least six weeks. Although daily activities resume fairly quickly, full healing takes time, and patience is important as the final results gradually emerge.
Your surgeon will provide specific recovery instructions, which may include:
- Do not blow your nose
- Keep your head elevated and use cold compresses
- Take prescribed medications as directed
- Avoid activities that could bump or injure the nose
Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline
- External sutures are removed
- Nasal splint is removed
- Initial changes in nasal shape are visible
- Swelling and bruising are most noticeable
- Avoid blowing your nose
- Swelling and bruising begin to reduce
- Continue to avoid strenuous activities or anything that can cause injury to your nose
- Swelling and bruising are reduced significantly
- Breathing comfort continues to improve
- Continued healing and refinement
- Protect your nose from sun exposure and contact
- Final refinement continues
- Complete healing may take up to one year, particularly in the nasal tip
